A chocolate Valhalla, ice cream shop, espresso bar and pastry studio... a place for lovers of the purest chocolate and the tastiest ice cream, in a bustling setting in the old center of Amsterdam. Where everything is homemade, with fresh and organic raw materials. Where the machines are running and the scents of roasted cocoa beans and freshly baked products attract passers-by. And this under the inspiring leadership of the Dutch chocolate pioneer Kees Raat.
It all started in August 2009. Kees Raat found a ideal place in the Warmoesstraat in Amsterdam to start the exciting adventure: Metropolitan. Since then, he has been making the tastiest, fresh Italian ice cream and delicious chocolate from beans from the Dominican Republic for his clients. Several restaurants in Amsterdam such as Restaurant Vermeer, De Tolhuistuin and The Lobby now use Metropolitan's fresh Italian ice cream for their desserts. Come and enjoy the world of ice cream and chocolate while enjoying a ristretto, espresso or cappuccino.
Metropolitan produces chocolate in a "bean to bar" process. The Dominican cocoa beans are roasted first, then crushed and rolled into a pure chocolate mass that serves as the basis for all chocolate products. The basic consists of 70% cocoa, but also with milk chocolate with only 40% is in the assortment. They have 25 different flavors of ice cream, from sorbet to gelato. It is important that only organic products are used for the ice cream: raw milk from a farm just outside Amsterdam, Brazilian cane sugar, fresh fruit and nuts.
At Metropolitan you step into Italy: a quick espresso at the bar or a delicious gelato outside in the sun. In addition to the homemade chocolate, Metropolitan also has many special other own products, such as cocoa beer, chocolate spoons to take home, a bag of cocoa beans or chocolate corn flakes... you name it and and Metropolitan has it!
That we are not the only Metropolitan fans is clear: people from all over the world likes to visit the store. Worldwide, this master chocolatier is being published; that is how de Uitkrant named them among the top 5 best chocolatiers in Amsterdam and they were mentioned at number 18 in the article "The World's Best Artisanal Chocolates" by American Express Essentials. Kees Raat has already been awarded for the best food truck, published his own Chocolate Bible and in February 2019 his cacoa beer was published in the Parool, a Dutch regional newspaper.
Metropolitan organizes chocolate and ice cream tastings in their store. Click here for more information about the chocolate tasting and click here for more information about the ice cream tasting. Tip: you can also combine the tastings with each other! And did you know that Metropolitan also likes to be present at your event for a private tasting?
