The Rembrandt House Museum
Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden in 1606 and left to move in Amsterdam in 1631. Together with his wife Saskia he lived in The Rembrandt House, which he bought in 1639 for 13.000 guilders, a huge amount at that time. Their son Titus was born in 1641. Saskia died in 1642, the same year that Rembrandt completed his masterpiece 'De Nachtwacht' (The Night Watch). Rembrandt went through a personal and artistic crisis, where he emerged as an even bigger artist. He died in 1669 at the respectable age of 63.
The Rembrandt House is now a special museum, which is definitely worth a visit. When you walk through the 17th century rooms, you imagine yourself in Rembrandt's time. The interior, including Rembrandt's studio, has been completely restored to its original state. A changing selection from the almost complete collection of Rembrandt keys is on permanent display. An interesting audio tour is included in your ticket and available at the entrance. Furthermore daily etching and paint demonstrations can be seen in the Rembrandt House.
